Key Moments:

Leadership Transition Ushers in New Phase
Resorts World Las Vegas has appointed former Nevada governor Brian Sandoval as the new chair of its board of directors. This decision signals the property’s intent to enter its next stage of growth. Sandoval replaces Jim Murren, who now serves as chair emeritus. Murren joined the board nearly a year ago and played a crucial role in guiding the resort through its pandemic recovery.
This leadership transition comes as Resorts World works to strengthen its position on the highly competitive Las Vegas Strip. Major operators such as MGM Resorts International, Caesars Entertainment, and Wynn Resorts dominate this landscape. Since its 2021 opening at a cost of $4.3 billion, the resort has continued to face strong competition from these long-established rivals.
Sandoval Brings Diverse Experience to the Fore
Brian Sandoval already has experience with the organization, as he joined the board in February. At that time, the company praised his visionary leadership and his commitment to public service. His promotion to board chair highlights the company’s goal of leveraging his broad background in politics and regulatory affairs.
Sandoval served as Nevada’s 29th governor from 2011 to 2019, marking the first time a Hispanic leader held the office in the state. His prior roles include Nevada Attorney General (2003-2005) and a three-year term with the Nevada Gaming Commission starting in 1999. Presently, Sandoval holds the position of 17th President at the University of Nevada, Reno, and is anticipated to leverage his background in governance and gaming oversight as Resorts World navigates a competitive environment.
Jim Murren Moves to Honorary Role
Jim Murren shifts to the role of chair emeritus following his significant impact within both Resorts World Las Vegas and the broader global gaming sector. Known for his leadership at MGM Resorts International as CEO and board chair, Murren played a role in driving major expansion initiatives, including those in Macau, Japan, and the US sports betting sector. Recently, he was appointed interim chief executive for the United Arab Emirates’ General Commercial Gaming Regulatory Authority, a transition resulting from Kevin Mullally’s departure. These expanded international duties are considered influential in the recent changes at the Resorts World board.
Legal Update: Lawsuit Reinstated
In addition to its leadership reconfiguration, Resorts World Las Vegas is now addressing a revived lawsuit brought by high-stakes gambler Robert “R.J.” Cipriani. Cipriani claims that the casino allowed patron Robert Alexander to repeatedly harass him on the property’s gaming floor. A US appeals court has sent this case back to the US District Court for additional review. As of now, no new court date has been determined. To reinforce its compliance team, Resorts World previously appointed Lou Dorn as chief legal officer and corporate secretary, along with Elizabeth Tranchina as general counsel, in September. Both have been recognized for their experience in legal and regulatory matters.
